In a tiny village in Bihar, during the darkest hours of the
night, raging floods swept Seeta's home away. Seeta struggled
through the swirling waters, clutching her infant son Kishore.
Barely escaping drowning, mother and child at last found refuge
at a local school. But their problems were just beginning. Acute
diarrhea struck Kishore. Then dehydration set in and Kishore
became listless and weak. Seeta watched Kishore helplessly. She
tenderly pressed him close to her, hoping to somehow save his
life.
Just when it seemed it was all over, help arrived in the form of
a small packet containing "Oral
Rehydration Salts" or
ORS - that a UNICEF trained health worker carried with her.
Handing Seeta the packet of ORS, the health worker showed the
distraught mother how to prepare and administer the miracle
solution to Kishore.
With each sip of the drink, life began to flow back into the
infant's body. In just a few hours his condition improved so
dramatically that he was on the road to full recovery.
That night, a single dose of ORS helped save Kishore's life. Just as it has for millions of dehydrated children around the globe.
For this reason ORS has been celebrated as the most important medical advance in the last 100 years.
Approximately 1,000 Indian children under the age of five die of
diarrhoeal dehydration every day - a condition that has such a
simple cure.
You can help change their fate.
